
Mount Saint Helens:
Background:
Mount Saint Helens is a national treasure. This volcano gained world wide
exposure on 18 May 1980 when it erupted. Currently there is a congressionally
mandated committee taking public comment to formulate a plan to preserve and
protect Mount Saint Helens while ensuring public access to this incredible area.
The total area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is 1.4 million acres. Of
this the US Park Service manages 400,000 acres around Mount St. Helens.
The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is 110,000 acres.
